Anxiety

What is Anxiety?

  • Anxiety is the mind and body's reaction to stressful, dangerous, or unfamiliar situations.

  • It is the uneasiness, distress, or dread you feel before a significant event.

  • A certain level of Anxiety helps us stay alert and aware.

At The Plum Psychology

  • We assess and treat anxiety across the lifespan, from young children to adults. We take an integrative approach to mental health care, meaning we use Cognitive Behavioral and Systems techniques in concert with relaxation and deep breathing to evaluate and treat anxiety.

  • Homework is usually given each session. It is often not paper and pencil work, but activities to do with family, friends, or within your work or other social environments.

  • We offer Individual therapy and family therapy. Both are good modalities to address issues that interfere with school, other people, and general well-being. We generally recommend family therapy for children and teens. We offer school-age children and teens their own confidentiality agreements in either modality.

Did you know?

  • It is very common for people to NOT recognize anxiety in themselves or in others.

  • Why? The stigmas around mental health and appearing weak do not allow people to “see” themselves.

  • Also, people tend to think of only typical symptoms of anxiety such as nervousness or worry. Many do not understand that people’s anxieties present differently.

  • Anger and agitation for example, can be signs of underlying anxiety.

Children and Teens

  • Anxiety runs in families. If one or more caregivers are anxious, children are more likely to be anxious.

  • Teaching children how to recognize and cope early with their own anxiety can have far reaching consequences on their overall health.

You and your loved ones do not have to struggle alone. Let us help you feel more grounded.
